The drug maker has been taking Viagra for years for the condition, which is not a cancer.
The company says its research found that patients with a family history of cancer and those taking the drug experienced a 20% higher rate of cancer recurrence in the first year after the drug was taken. In contrast, those in the same group who didn't take the drug experienced a 5-10% higher rate.
The cancer patients in the study were asked to fill out a form with their cancer diagnosis and other relevant information.
"Patients who took Viagra were much more likely to have a cancer recurrence than those who did not take Viagra. However, this does not appear to be the case for patients who were taking Viagra," said Dr. Ian Read, CEO of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Read said Viagra should be taken every day. "The drug has the potential to prevent or treat cancer, but it's not without side effects. The only thing it's effective at is increasing blood flow to the brain."
Read is not the only person to take Viagra.
The drug is not known to have an effect on men's sexual function.
